The first chapter is about finding a direction, detecting tension
and recognizing a harmony between two apparently discordant world views.
I recognized a desire
to teach an understanding of the world around us through science. I also,
almost instantaneously, recognized that my incompleteness would not be wholly
filled by pursuing a career. I realized that God provided the grace to be
complete through Jesus and He told that story primarily through the Bible.
The harmony between science and the Bible came through learning
that God’s word isn’t just a book. The Bible is meant to be read and studied
and understood through the history of the people that lived it and a recognition
that that record was intended to speak into the lives of every generation
after.
The introduction describes two wonderful worldviews that at
times seem impossible to integrate then presses the reader to see that they can
be.

While crossing the bighorns, which were big picture in every way, I had the opposite thought, when in all the bigness, both dad and I were drawn to the smallnesses that made the experience important. The little river that created the valley, the million tiny wildflowers, the little old couple that staffed the visitor center at the tip-top of the mountain. Dad's need to explain the soil structure to me. The fact that we hardly ever saw a car, but there were a crowd of them up on the mountaintop with us.
